2001 TORREY PINES FALCONS
FIELD HOCKEY

It doesn’t get any better than this: the 2001 Falcons varsity field hockey team won their first-ever CIF championship by beating their archrivals La Costa Canyon 3-2 in a title game that wasn’t decided until overtime.

Torrey Pines finished with an overall record of 21 wins, two losses and one tie during Kari Labeta’s second year as head coach, a season during which they also went 7-1 in Palomar League play and tied for the league championship.

What’s notable about the Falcons’ CIF victory was the fact that it was the last “all San Diego” championship before field hockey was split into division one and division two the following year.

The Falcons incredible 2001 season was powered by many of the same players who would lead Torrey to another CIF championship and Palomar League title the following year including Cara Lopresti, Jessica Javelet, Ashley Pernicano, Laura Cosan, Kelley Birch, Haley and Tracey Scott. 

Among the few seniors on the team were Gina Tashijan (who would go on to play field hockey at the University of Pacific) and an Argentina-born forward by the name of Analia Carlsson who took over (from Kari) as Falcon head coach in 2007. 

Javelet was named 2002 Palomar League Player of the year and made CIF First Team along with Pernicano and Lopresti. Cosan and Tashijan were chosen for CIF Second Team. All five of those players were also tabbed for All-Palomar first or second teams. While Javelet was named the Torrey Pines field hockey program’s Most Outstanding Athlete that season.

The Teams:

The TPHS Field Hockey Archives were assembled in 2008 in an attempt to document the history of the Torrey Pines Field Hockey Program. Unfortunately we didn't have a team website prior to 2003 (with the exception of a student-created website of the 2000 season). The Archives were created by the efforts of Joe Yogerst, Kari DiGiulio, and Analia Carlson. Former players, parents of players and coaches: to please send us whatever information that might have from the past that could help us fill in the missing years!
